It’s easy to believe that belonging is something we earn once we have our lives a little more together. We tell ourselves we’ll join the conversation when we feel more confident, ask for support when we know exactly what we need, or feel proud when we finally reach a goal. In the meantime, we can find ourselves holding back, wondering whether we have enough progress to share or whether everyone else has already figured out something we’re still learning.
But you don’t need a finished story to be part of a community. You can be uncertain about your next step, frustrated with a familiar struggle, or just beginning to understand what you need—and still have something valuable to bring. Your questions, experiences, and willingness to listen all contribute to connection. Sometimes, admitting that you’re figuring things out gives someone else permission to be honest, too.
When we compare our everyday lives with what we see of other people, we often miss how much remains unseen. Someone who speaks confidently may still question their choices. Someone celebrating a healthy habit may have spent months practicing it. Someone offering encouragement may need encouragement themselves. Recognizing this can help us enter a conversation with more curiosity and less pressure to prove that we’re doing well.
Belonging can grow through small moments: showing up to a workshop even when you don’t have an update, asking a question you’ve been hesitant to ask, or hearing someone describe an experience that sounds like your own. You don’t have to share everything right away. Listening, getting comfortable, and returning when you can are meaningful ways to participate. Connection takes time, and you’re allowed to find your own pace.
It also helps to notice the conditions you place on yourself. If you catch yourself thinking, “I’ll feel comfortable once I’ve made more progress,” pause and consider what you would say to someone you care about. Would you ask them to reach a milestone before welcoming them? Or would you want them to know they could come as they are? Offering yourself that same kindness creates room to recognize what you’re already contributing, even as you continue to grow.
At Lifting Your Life Coaching, we want our community to be a place where you can bring both your progress and your questions. There is room to celebrate a success, talk through a difficult week, and explore a different approach. Support can help you discover what works for you, especially during the times when the answers aren’t clear yet.
This week, consider one small way you could let yourself connect without waiting to feel ready. Perhaps that means attending a workshop, reaching out to someone, or answering honestly when you’re asked how you’re doing. You can keep learning, changing, and working toward what matters to you while also allowing yourself to feel welcome today.
You belong while you’re becoming.
What helps you feel welcome and valued as you are right now?
