Put Yourself on the Calendar: Because You Deserve a Spot on Your Own Schedule

Take a look at your calendar for the coming week. Chances are, it's filled with appointments, work commitments, family activities, errands, and all the things that need to get done. We make time for the people who depend on us, keep track of important dates, and do our best to stay on top of everything life throws our way.

But somewhere in the middle of all those responsibilities, there's often one person missing from the schedule. You.

When was the last time you intentionally blocked out time for yourself? Not because you had an appointment or something that absolutely needed to get done, but because you wanted to do something that supported your health, happiness, or personal growth.

For many of us, making time for ourselves feels like something we'll get around to once everything else is finished. We tell ourselves we'll take that walk when work slows down, prepare healthier meals when the week isn't so hectic, or spend time doing something we enjoy once we've taken care of everyone else.

The problem is that there will almost always be something else to do.

Stop Waiting for Life to Slow Down

One of the biggest challenges with putting ourselves first is believing that we need more time. We look at our schedules and wonder where we're supposed to fit anything else. But investing in yourself doesn't necessarily mean adding another hour-long commitment to your day. Sometimes it's about being more intentional with the time you already have.

Maybe it's taking 15 minutes to walk outside before starting dinner, sitting down to enjoy your lunch instead of eating while answering emails, or attending a coaching workshop that helps you work through something you've been struggling with. It might even mean giving yourself permission to sit quietly for a few minutes without feeling like you should be doing something productive.

These moments may seem small, but they matter. When we consistently make space for ourselves, we're reinforcing the idea that our needs deserve attention, too.

At Lifting Your Life Coaching, we often talk about becoming 5% better. That doesn't mean changing everything overnight or creating a routine that's impossible to maintain. It means recognizing that small, intentional choices can move us in the direction we want to go. Putting yourself on the calendar is one of those choices.

Give Yourself the Same Commitment You Give Everyone Else

Think about how you approach an appointment with someone else. If you have a doctor's appointment, a meeting, or a commitment to a friend, you generally make an effort to be there. You plan around it because you've decided that time is important.

Now think about what happens when you schedule something for yourself.

It's often the first thing we cancel when the day gets busy. A walk gets pushed aside because there's laundry to finish. Time to read disappears because one more email needs an answer. The workshop you wanted to attend gets skipped because something else comes up.

Of course, there will always be days when plans need to change. Life requires flexibility, and sometimes other priorities really do need our attention. But rather than removing yourself from the schedule altogether, what if you simply moved that commitment to another time?

Making yourself a priority doesn't mean ignoring your responsibilities or putting everyone else's needs aside. It means recognizing that you can care for others while also making room to care for yourself.

And the more often you follow through on those commitments, the easier it becomes to view that time as a normal, valuable part of your week rather than something extra.

What Does Investing in Yourself Look Like?

There's no single right answer because what we need can change from day to day. Some days, investing in yourself might look like movement and activity. Other days, it might mean rest, connection, learning something new, or simply giving yourself a break.

It can also look different depending on the season of life you're in. Maybe you're working on creating healthier eating habits, managing stress, building confidence, or finding more balance between your responsibilities and personal goals.

Whatever you're working toward, the important part is making space for it.

This is where your calendar can become a helpful tool. Instead of thinking about what you'd like to do if there's time left over, try looking ahead and deciding when you can realistically make it happen. You don't have to fill every open space with activities. In fact, sometimes the best thing you can schedule is time to do absolutely nothing.

The goal isn't to create another list of expectations. It's to make choices that help you feel supported, fulfilled, and connected to what matters most.

Start With Three Appointments for Yourself

As you look ahead to next week, consider setting aside three small blocks of time just for you. Think about something that supports your physical health, something that supports your mindset or personal growth, and something that simply brings you happiness.

Maybe you'll plan a walk on Monday, attend a Lifting Your Life workshop on Wednesday, and spend some time on Sunday doing something you've been wanting to enjoy. Your choices don't need to be complicated or time-consuming, and they certainly don't need to look like anyone else's.

What's important is that you make those appointments intentionally and give yourself permission to keep them.

If the week doesn't go exactly as planned, that's okay. We're not striving for perfection. We're building habits that support us over time, and learning to be flexible is part of that process.

Your Next Choice Matters

It's easy to get caught up in everything we have to do and forget about the things that help us feel our best. But the truth is, we don't have to wait until life becomes less busy to start making ourselves a priority.

Sometimes the most meaningful change begins with something as simple as opening your calendar and finding a little space for yourself.

At Lifting Your Life Coaching, our community is built around the idea that you don't have to figure everything out alone. Through live workshops, supportive conversations, and practical strategies, we help one another make choices that support lasting progress, one step at a time.

If you've been meaning to make more time for yourself, consider joining one of our workshops. It's an opportunity to step away from the demands of everyday life, focus on your own growth, and connect with people who are working toward many of the same goals.

This week, before your calendar fills up with everything you need to do for everyone else, make sure there's a little room for you.

Because investing in yourself isn't selfish, and it doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes it starts with one small appointment and the decision to show up for yourself.

Your next choice matters. Make one of those choices YOU.
