Are You Giving Yourself Enough Credit?

Why recognizing your progress is just as important as making it.

When was the last time you stopped and gave yourself credit for something you did well? Not a major accomplishment or a big milestone, but something small that showed you were making progress.

So often, we spend our time thinking about what we still need to work on. We focus on the weight we haven't lost, the habits we haven't mastered, or the goals we haven't reached. In doing so, we sometimes overlook all the ways we've already grown.

Maybe you've started making more thoughtful choices throughout the day. Perhaps you're learning to recognize when you need a break instead of pushing yourself to the point of exhaustion. Or maybe you've had a difficult week, but instead of giving up completely, you've learned how to move forward without feeling like you need to start over.

These changes might not seem significant in the moment, but they're often the very things that lead to lasting progress.

Progress Isn't Always Something You Can Measure

When it comes to weight loss and wellness, it's natural to pay attention to numbers. We look at the scale, track our activity, and measure our progress against the goals we've set. While those things can provide useful information, they don't always tell the whole story.

Some of the most meaningful changes happen in the way we think, respond, and approach everyday situations. Think about how you handle a day that doesn't go as planned. In the past, an unexpected meal, a missed workout, or a stressful afternoon might have left you feeling frustrated enough to abandon your efforts for the rest of the week. Now, perhaps you're able to recognize that one choice doesn't define your entire journey.

That shift in thinking is something worth celebrating.

The same is true when you begin recognizing your own needs, setting boundaries, or asking for support. These changes may not show up on a chart or a scale, but they can make a tremendous difference in your ability to build habits that last.

Why Are We So Quick to Overlook Our Accomplishments?

It's interesting how easily we recognize progress in others while struggling to acknowledge it in ourselves. When a friend shares something they've accomplished, we're often the first to encourage them. We remind them how far they've come and help them see the positive changes they may have missed.

Yet when it comes to our own accomplishments, we tend to raise the bar.

We reach one goal and immediately begin thinking about the next. Instead of taking a moment to appreciate what we've achieved, we focus on what we still need to do. Over time, this can make even meaningful progress feel like it's never quite enough.

But recognizing your accomplishments doesn't mean you're settling or losing sight of your goals. It simply means giving yourself permission to appreciate the effort you've already put in. You can be proud of where you are today while still being excited about where you're going.

In fact, acknowledging those small victories can help build the confidence and motivation needed to keep moving forward.

Learning to See Your Progress Differently

One way to begin recognizing your progress is to change the questions you're asking yourself. Rather than focusing entirely on what didn't go well, spend a little time thinking about what you're handling differently than you would have several months ago.

Maybe you've become more flexible when your schedule changes. Perhaps you're making choices based on what your body needs rather than following a rigid set of rules. You might even notice that you're speaking to yourself with more patience and understanding when something doesn't go as planned.

These are all signs that you're developing a healthier, more sustainable approach to your wellness journey.

And remember, progress doesn't mean every day will be better than the one before it. There will still be frustrating moments, unexpected challenges, and times when old habits show up again. What matters is how you respond and what you choose to do next.

Give Yourself Credit Along the Way

At Lifting Your Life Coaching, we believe lasting change comes from small, meaningful choices made consistently over time. Part of that process is learning to appreciate the progress you're making, even when it looks different from what you originally expected.

So before you start thinking about everything you want to accomplish next week, take a moment to reflect on something you've already done well. Think about a situation you handled differently, a habit you've improved, or a challenge you've worked through.

You might discover that you've made more progress than you've been giving yourself credit for.

And the next time you find yourself wondering why you aren't further along, remember that you don't have to reach your final destination before you can feel proud of the journey.

Your progress matters, your effort matters, and every choice you make gives you another opportunity to move forward.
